In the Middle Ages, wars and fighting occurred regularly. Over time, enough armor was added that knights were covered from head to toe. The helmets worn made identifying a knight
impossible. In order to avoid being mistakenly attacked by a friend, each knight wore a cloth with an exclusive painted design over his suit of armor. This design was called a Coat of
Arms. A Coat of Arms consists of a shield, such as the one the knight would carry into battle, a crest, which was usually an animal sitting above the shield, and a motto, if one existed.
